The camp is easily accessible to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park.
We have been in communication with the camp director and below are questions we had about the camp and his answers – The camp is very accommodating to our needs.
1. Can we do our own activities during the day instead of planned camp activities? We would be leaving camp to go on hikes in Yellowstone or Grand Tetons.
Yes. You can do anything that you have planned. Just let us know where you will be.
2. How would this affect meals and camp scheduled activities. Do we need to be at camp for breakfast and dinner, or can we pick up food and eat on our own schedule (Island Park camp says they are going to dining hall meals in 2018).
We can provide any meals in camp that you will need, and if given a schedule of what you might need for trail meals, we can also help you plan those. We normally set up hike meals for troops so it wouldn’t be something new. But if every lunch will be out of camp, we will just need to plan for extra hike meals rather than just one. If you want the regular menu, but just early enough to pack it for later preparation outside of camp, we can also work that out with you. If you have plans to return to camp late, we can hold your food for you for a later pick-up.
If you have plans for your own food on your trail trips, we can work out specifics as to how many meals you won’t need from us.
3. We may have some scouts 13 years old. Will this be acceptable since our own troop and leaders are taking responsibility outside camp?
Registered scouts of all ages are welcome at any time. If you plan to separate the group and leave younger scouts in camp to participate and take older scouts on day trips (or over-nighters, etc.), yes, as long as you have sufficient leadership over your scout groups, no problem.
4. Can family or siblings of scouts stay at camp. We typically offer our summer trip activities to family members, space permitting.
Families are always welcome. Parents and siblings visit camp often. Younger siblings under the care of parents are fine.
5. Can we use the facilities on Sat or Sunday, outside of the normal schedule? If not, are there any other camping facilities close by if we want to extend our trip?
At Treasure Mt., we often have adult staffers stay weekends and so will be able to help you get set up and whatever you may need while normal camp operations are shut down. Meals will be more of an issue for these cases, unless there is some detailed pre-planning, or if you provide your own food over the weekend days. We can make arrangements for storage if necessary to adhere to US Forest Service Food Storage mandates due to being in bear habitat.
The next step for the summer trip committee is to examine our transportation options:
1 – Fly from Phoenix to Idaho Falls and rent 15 passenger vans (90 minutes from the airport to the camp).
2 – Rent vans in Phoenix and drive (2 day travel time each way) – would require the troop to leave on Friday, July 13.
3 – Charter a bus from Phoenix – same transportation logistics as driving vans from Phoenix
If we do fly, we will also need a couple parents to haul a trailer from Phoenix with everybody’s personal gear – we will save on airfare fees by not having luggage with us on the plane.
